Okay...so I've been trying to stay out of this whole Lime Crime scandal, but after I just watched Xenia's "How I Make Eyeshadow" video on YouTube, I just had to break my silence.

WOW.

First of all, I have a very small indie cosmetics shop on Etsy, and if you want ANY type of consistency, this is NOT how you mix a color. I keep a binder (and electronic copy, of course) of all my recipes, and when I measure it out, I make sure to level off each scoop for accuracy. If you're using any type of oxides, you almost HAVE to put them in an automated mixer or grinder (or do the tedious work of mortar and pestle, which can actually break down the sparkle factor in many colors)...mixing by hand (especially in a plastic baggie...seriously?) usually doesn't blend enough (unless you are using mortar and pestle), and you get a very streaky application. Trust me, I tried this as a newbie...and it was a total FAIL.

Oh, and scooping some out mid-process can totally jack up the overall composition of the finished product...maybe not so much on large batches, but in a teensy weensy baggie? She scooped out about a fifth of what she put in there! In that small of an amount (using only 0.15cc scoops to crudely measure tiny amounts of mica, oxide, etc.), that's enough to change the end result and throw the formula completely off.

I tend to have a lot of faith in people, and I really love to see my fellow artisans and friends in the MMU industry rise and succeed... But I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone mass-producing colors like this would not be able to keep up with the amount of customers that LC has generated, and they would likely end up with some very pissed off repeat customers due to inconsistency of the shade.

Granted, Xenia did say that it goes to a "lab"...but isn't that contradicting her claim that she makes them all herself? Just saying.

someone mentioned the "miss.x" eyeshadow line in comments in the blog entry below this one, so i looked at the site and it looks like repackaging tkb and jacking up the price is pretty commonplace.

teeny tiny square jars the same size as a mac sample = check

price range $12 and above for teeny tiny jar = check

easily dupable colors = check

the cobra killer shade on the site looks an awful lot like lc dragon scales (based on the generic looking swatch photo).

i wonder what kalia westerman from tkb would think about all of this. has anyone tried contacting her and seeing what she thinks about all the people that are taking credit for her hard work?

Hey Ana, if you want to revise the TKB/LC list, Gothique has found that "Siren" is actually TKB's "Hot Mama." And Ashley found that "Twilight" is Coastal Scent's "blue-red chrome mica". Just thought you might want to update to make the list more accurate since Xenia is using the few errors on this list to try to prove us wrong! I am dying to know what you think of her new video calling us out as liars, lol.

Also, if you look, anyone can see how she swatched them differently. Her colors were swatched normally, with several layers (probably over a base), while the "fake dupe" (and ahem, fake dupes my ass) was lightly dusted on in a single layer. Because that REALLY makes you look more credible.

I like how Xenia chose those very few colors on the list that weren't swatched and confirmed yet, and used them as proof that the list was wrong. I love how she chose Siren, of all colors, as proof. It was the ONE on my list I knew was wrong and personally bought samples to match.

I have SINCE corrected the list with the right color. So technically the dupe she was trying to 'dupe' us with was wrong.

But again, right now I have PROOF in my hand PERSONALLY that Siren and Hot Moma are the exact same thing.

When you mentioned the 'squadron of unicorns', I couldn't help but think of my old Sweet Valley Twins books --- Does anyone else here remember Lila and Jessica being members of the Unicorn Club and the entire club being obsessed with everything and anything coloured purple?

Like the "how i make lipsticks" post didn't insult our intelligence enough, Xenia has now posted a "how i make eyeshadows" entry in her blog. It basically shows her trying to dupe a TKB color pretending she made it herself. But it's obvious she didn't create it because she has no recipe for it and it takes her several tries to get the color to match. Will this bitch ever just give it up?!

Disclaimer: If I ever ran into Doe/Xenia in person, I'd probably spit on her. I'm disgusted by her behavior as a small business owner, lack of ethics, anti-science marketing, etc. But I'm very fond of the truth and accuracy.

I wanted to run Venison's account of lab work by someone who actually knows the cosmetic science industry, so I turned to The Beauty Brains (thebeautybrains.com... if you don't already read, start!) After all, just because me and my university lab worker friends couldn't identify the machines in the silly photo doesn't automatically mean they're fake; none of us are cosmetic chemists. Here's the response I got from Left Brain:

"Hello Curses - The machines behind her in the photos are a mixer (looks like a Lightnin' brand mixer) and a viscometer.

Her story sounds about right from a process standpoint. Colors are usually chosen by Marketing people and they are given to cosmetic chemists to match. Her story is a bit naive however. Every manner of color has been made and there is nothing unique about what she is doing. The reason you don't see funky colors for sale is because people don't buy them in high enough volumes for companies to make them.

It is not the lack of creativity of cosmetic chemists, it's the lack of influence they have on what products get launched. Chemists make the formulas that Marketing people want to launch. The industry is really driven by Marketing departments. Those departments are driven by consumer research.

Hope that makes sense.

I also did some research on the private labeling process. In a nutshell, she's doing absolutely nothing remarkable. That in itself doesn't bother me, it's the constant claims of innovation that border on false advertising. If I want to be a fashion designer, I don't buy another designer's products, slap new embellishments on, and call it my own. If I know how to use a mass spec, I don't claim I invented it. Actually, I think if someone in the US put together enough documentation, you could probably report her to the Better Business Bureau... probably not the FTC, though, since they're still a bit behind on internet regulations.

I have to wonder what she does on Halloween, with thousands of people all around wearing make-up shades she claims to have invented. Does she honestly think they all purchased from Lime Crime? Or does she just look for new products to rip off?
