On The Road To Viridian City

In my last (relevant) post, I showed you this picture:

And now I'm going to show you some more. The army of little sample baggies there came from Shiro Cosmetics, a new company which emerged earlier this year with a collection of 40 pokémon themed eyeshadows. They've then gone on to release a collection of 30 Legend of Zelda inspired eyeshadows.

I feel particularly close to Shiro; not just because it's geeky make-up, but also because, remarkably, this blog, me and all of you, were the inspiration for the business owner to start doing it. Caitlin, who owns Shiro, said that it was here that she realised there was a market for geeky make-up, and decided to make a go of it.

I think she's done tremendously. I'm pretty honoured to have had a hand in the company coming to be, even if it was just a minimal one. Remember back when I reviewed Sassy Minerals, and I said that this was a start-up company that was doing everything right? I feel the same way about Shiro, only am doubly impressed because I know it's a one-woman operation.

The Etsy store is clean, well laid out, easy to navigate (it's obvious what products are, and what they do) listings are spelled correctly and include ingredients details, shade descriptions, proper weight/volume, product shots and swatches. There's a lot of clean photography and nice graphics. The brand image is only just developing, but it all fits together well. Each colour has an amusing little blurb that comments on the name, and I spent a good length of time going through and reading them all. My favourite one is Zubat's:
I hate Zubat. You're just trying to make your way through the crazy-long cave, and your Pokemon are at half-health and poisoned, and you still have a couple more trainers to go but the exit is almost in sight, and you know you can make it! But then a wild Zubat appears and uses Supersonic and you can't escape and AUGH I HATE YOU ZUBAT
There's a website which is under construction and being worked on, in-between the order filling and working on new collections.

The packaging is lovely. Isn't that lovely? I love the matte black lids (my preference over shiny ones) and the stickers are high quality and beautifully designed. It makes me want a ton of full-sizes, because I want little pokéballs on my desk! I also love that they offer three sizes - samples (1/4 tsp, like Fyrinnae) mini-jars and full-size jars, and the full-sizes are only $5. All the products have bulk discounts that are actually very generous, and the shipping is extremely reasonable ($1.50 everywhere with huge sample orders, $3.50 with huge jar orders), and often same-day dispatch if you order early.

I don't know how she has time to sleep. I am, honestly, totally thrown by the woman in charge. Caitlin manages to run a company - and run it well, getting orders out often in the same day they are placed - go to college (Advanced mathematics?), raise a child, and she's younger than me. She's got the great photography for the store, lovely packaging and is always working out new solutions, she's working on three new collections that I know of, in-between endless homework, classes, and being a very hands-on mother, and still filling orders. I don't have a coherent way to say how amazing that is. I mean. Wow. I consider it a pretty busy day if I manage to put a clean pair of pants on.

I'm sure I sound incredibly biased, but if you fail to find that impressive then you must be Wonder Woman, and let's see your make-up company, Wonder Woman. I didn't know Caitlin before I checked out her company, and I'm quite late to it, I know Grey and Phyrra both had good things to say. Because the Shiro themes spoke to my nerdy side, I really wanted to swatch absolutely everything and make you all whine at me for making you want more things.

You'd perhaps think, then, that considering she gets so much done, the colours were repackaged. But they're not. Not even a little bit. If some look similar it's only because the picture you're looking at doesn't show you the colour well enough to see the differences. I've swatched and compared every single eyeshadow Shiro sells, and they are all unique. They all use at least three base colourants and their base is blended individually to each shadow, since not all eyeshadows need the same base. Pikachu, for example, (one of my favourites) from a distance might look a lot like TKB Lemon Drop Pop! but close-up, it's something I've never seen from a company, a warm yellow with a bit of a golden edge and bright red sparkles. It doesn't look orange, though, it looks yellow with red sparks. Like Pikachu.

Pikachu vs TKB Lemon Drop Pop! - no repackaging here.

Sure, the eyeshadows aren't as complex as Fyrinnae, but considering they're the first couple of collections from a new company, they're surprisingly wonderful. Caitlin is still learning and expanding, but didn't do what so many companies did when they started, and just start selling TKB repacks or blending them on a simple base without changing the colour, or fill a store with private label items. I really like that.

One of my favourite things about indie make-up is the ability to see who is behind it, and to also help the company grow. And, in my case, bug the owner continually and make ever-more-bizarre colour and shade name requests. As you know, I like to name things.

Anyway. Enough of that, this is why you're here. Shiro Cosmetics sent me samples of every colour, in exchange for letting her use my swatches in her shop, 'cause people like my swatches and they generally turn out very accurately.

Beautiful presentation!

Super Effective Collection

Legends Collection

All swatched over Pixie Epoxy & photographed under a daylight bulb. These swatches (and, all my swatches for everyone) are also up in neat, organised folders on the Facebook page, for easy browsing.

My favourites are:
Pikachu, Link, Gyarados, Rattata, Majora's Mask, Steelix Moltres, Din's Fire, Moosh, Farore's Wind, Nayru's Love, Veran, Likelike, Sudowoodo, Gengar, Zora, Oshus, Master Sword, Golem, Epona, Ganondorf, Temple of Time, Meowth, Rapidish, S.S. Anne.

I love them. I particularly love the neutrals, which is... weird. Phyrra says the same thing, the neutrals are shockingly gorgeous, even to bright-lovers like us. Honestly, everything is lovely. The formula uses carnauba wax, and they feel great on, have great colour pay-off and longevity, etc. I experienced no staining whatsoever, even from the brighter ones like Gyarados and Rattata.

Putting everything together, the product, the product range, the service, the packaging, presentation, the whole thing, I have to say that Shiro Cosmetics is my second favourite make-up company. Entirely. The first being Fyrinnae (obviously) that's a pretty huge compliment.
I am personally astounded by Caitlin and everything she's accomplished, and everything she continues to do, and honestly, I'm incredibly excited to see what she comes up with next.

Yeah, damn you, basically *shakes fist* I can take or leave Pokemon, but there are a few Zeldas there I need. (Master Sword, Epona, Temple of Time, Deku....)

All the ones listed are gooorgeous. I think you should add Ganondorf, too, as crease colour. *Nod*

100% totally agree with everything. I also like the neutrals (and would be all over more of anything). I would actually love for a few more satin finish shades too..corporate = no shinies in the office )=. *Crosses fingers and hopes certain awesome reads*. I was also pretty shocked when I swatched the greens in the new zelda collection. I didn't bother to get any minis because I rarely wear green.. but..I think I might have to get.. well frankly all of them.

You *might* be pleasantly surprised then, Seii. ~_^ I have to say, satin finishes are my personal favourite. I liked rattata a lot for that reason, it's a bold satiny type purple but with a blue pearl that will show up more when blended out. I like colours like that.

I wasn't blown away by Rupee, but unlike you I own a GREAT many greens so it's not to say it's not lovely, just something I've seen before. Link is really something though, good foresty greens are hard to find!

I'm pretty much in <3 with Caitlin. First two gay boys, now a straight girl. Why can't an eligible male make make-up for me?

Haha I can't explain it very well. I have pretty much every colour bar three I think.. I just need to get more minis. More I say! D:.

Fyrinnae and Shiro are my top two favorites too! I love every single Shiro color that I have, and Caitlin is so nice. My favorites that I have are probably Meowth, Budew, Temple of Time, Zora, and Ganondorf. I was really impressed with what I tried from the Legends collection..I'm probably going to order more soon.

Ffffffff- I just bought make up yesterday (for the first time in half a year!) and I thought I was done for awhile BUT NOOOO YOU HAD TO POST BEAUTIFUL SWATCHES. ;-;

I looooove pretty much every color in the Super Effective collection. I want a sample baggie of EVERY. COLOR. Or at least all the blues and purples. They all look so different and lovely!

Whelp, looks like I'll be placing another makeup order in the near future!

I know that I was thoroughly shocked when I finally ordered from Shiro. What they look like in person looked NOTHING like how I saw them on other blogs (now excluding yours). They just might be my "new Fyrinnae", since I've got just about every damn color they make now. I wish I hadn't taken so long to get to her company, and I need to hurry up and get my post up =/

@Neoscottie - Bwahaha. I love how mad everyone gets. Hey, at least it's CHEAP! The entire sample set for Super Effective is $32! That's 80c a sample and they're 1.4 tsp, which is LARGE.
Also, uhm, you gotta buy 'em all :(

@Dominique - Yeah, I'm late on the bandwagon, too! The worst part was getting to know Caitlin while I was waiting for international mail. I totally fell in love with her and was hoping "Oh god I hope the eyeshadows don't suck". I was so, so so happy when I got to try them and see how lovely they are.

Her shots don't show up the detail at all! They're so sparkly and different. The browns in particular from SE look rubbish on Etsy, and SO SO lovely in person! Ahh!

I love Shiro ^-^

I remember seeing Shiro for the first time on Etsy when it was just starting out and I was seriously impressed. Most (not all) Etsy brands are focused on subtle shadows or adding as much sparkle as humanly possible while Shiro had vivid, solid colors. Rather surprised Shiro grew so fast - but then again I'm really not. As a Pokemon fan for many, many years, I couldn't help but feel magnetized. And then I saw someone did a somewhat recent review before yours with the box just opened and the contents were revealed only to see it was the most visually appealing presentation that showed 110% time and devotion put into it. Bravo - and I can't wait to place a big order one day and see Shiro expand.

This. Shiro= awesome and I really can't add anything that wasn't already said in the post or the comments above :)

Except, maybe, that I'm still hoping for a "mudkip" shadow to be added someday ^___^

I feel the same way about Shiro! I love the nerdy theme of her shop and she is such a friendly person. The descriptions for the colours, especially the Zubat one, make me laugh. (Being a HUGE Pokemon nerd I was able to relate to all of them.) I was extremely impressed with not only the eyeshadows, but the great customer service. My order arrived in only 3 days.

Pikachu looks nothing like the TKB yellow. When I read the disclaimer she put on the listing I was expecting it to look closer to the TKB.

Shiro was the second indie makeup company I ever ordered from and I was not disappointed. Your swatches are great, you definitely do the colours justice.

I have never commented on your posts before, because I'm a silent lurker by nature, but I have to say:

Pokemon themed eye make-up? Did I die and go to heaven? I really don't know what to say. I've been a hardcore fan ever since my Grammy bought me Red shortly after it's U.S. release. I'm so friggin' thrilled over this, it's a little sad. XD

As a close, personal friend to Caitlin, I can't tell you how wonderful all these comments are. Caitlin is an inspiration, and I constantly am reminded of how lucky I am to have her in my life. She's the most determined, hardest working, passionate individual I've ever met. With all that said, I'm fairly certain this is breaching "community protocol" on some level, but I needed to thank everyone for their support and courtesy, and thank Ana specifically for the time and thought it took to write this all up.

11 November 2010 05:08

Anastasia said...

@Mato - Don't mention it. You know her, so you know it's all true, and reviewing companies is what I do. When they all put in as much work, and dedication and get as many things right as Shiro does, they deserve a good write-up!

On a personal level, I have to agree with you that she is a fantastic - and physics bending - human being.

@Jules - Howcanyounotlovepokémon? Well, the shadows are still gorgeous, at least =D I'm more of a SEGA girl so Zelda isn't my bag, but I adore some of the colours in it. And I'm excited about the future collections.

@SunnySide - Right there with you, Sunny! I cleared out a drawer just for new pokéball jars yesterday. Must catch 'em all :x

I love the colors, the quick shipping, presentation, etc. I had issues with application, especially with Pikachu. I tried several different primers, thinking maybe it was the primer.

The shadow was chunky. It wasn't chunky on the brush, just when I started to pat it on my lid. It seemed to "ball up" if that makes sense. I never had a shadow do that. I tried my UD primer potion, shadow insurance, some vegan primer I got from another shop and then no primer and it still did it.

I thought maybe my brush was wet, but it wasn't. I have no idea, but I love the Pikachu color and wanted to wear it, but it just balled up on me. I haven't tried my other samples to see if does the same.
