FOTD: Learn To Swim.

After getting my hands on some of Aromaleigh's wonderful, bright eyeshadows, I wanted to do another rainbow EOTD. I've been meaning to do a better one for ages, but they're difficult (at least, for me) and I tend to bugger them up. Still, armed with an awful lot of Aromaleigh products I decided to start and not stop until I got it right.

The step-by-step is heavily edited, because I'm wearing about 14-15 shadows, but you can only see... 10. So to simply things and avoid you repeating my many 'oops, I fucked it up' steps, I've just tried to leave the whole fucking-up part out.

Learn To Swim - Step-by-Step

Face

  • Prime with Urban Decay Pore Perfecting primer.
  • Apply concealer - Bobbi Brown's Corrector in Light Bisque - where necessary.
  • Dot Estée Lauder Doublewear foundation in Shell over areas that need the most coverage using the MAC 191 brush.
  • Buff foundation into skin in circular motions using the MAC 187, adding more where necessary, until it's all blended in.
  • Wipe off the MAC 187 and buff Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish all over face to finish.

Eyes

  • Prime with a MAC Paint Pot in Painterly, smoothed all over the lid and up to the eyebrow.
  • Add a dab of Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy to the lid and smooth it over the paint pot. (A review of this is forthcoming - spoiler: it's fucking amazing. If you don't own it, go and buy it now to save yourself having to do it later. While you're at it, why not buy some eyeshadow samples and get free shipping?)
  • Wait a few seconds for the epoxy to become tacky, then pat on Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic Eyeshadow in Fanclub to the inner-corner and first centimetre-or-so of your eyelid. Kinda depends on how big your eyes are. Divide the lid into four (mentally, please) and fill in, roughly, just under a quarter. Use a thin brush, like a pencil GOSH round/MAC 219 brush.
  • Go over that with Aromaleigh Les Papillons Eyeshadow in Flying Flower.
  • Wipe the brush off and apply Aromaleigh Hot In The City Eyeshadow in Neon Lights to the next quarter, using the ol' dab/pat method. Blend the edges into the edge of the pink segment very lightly. Overblending will kill the look, so blend by simply sweeping the colour against the edge of the pink lightly, with the tip of the brush.
  • The next quarter is Aromaleigh Hot In The City Eyeshadow in Italian Ice, wipe off then apply as above, using the same very light blending method.
  • Next one is green. Here I started with Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic Eyeshadow in Estranged, blending it into the Italian Ice, and then I switch to a MAC 217 stiff-domed brush to darken the outer-V with Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic Eyeshadow in Greenhell, and darken the crease/bring the green up, above the crease slightly.
  • Back to the thin pencil brush, apply a little of the Pixie Epoxy along your lower lashline (not waterline) and once it's tacky, pat on a thin line of Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic Eyeshadow in Planetearth, starting from the outer-V and progressing to the middle of the eye.
  • Wipe off, and dab Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic Eyeshadow in Spellbound along the remaining half of your lower lashline, into the inner-corner.
  • Highlight along the brow-bone with your standard highlight, I used MAC Shroom and a MAC 275 SE brush.
  • With a clean, thin brush (pencil will do, or smaller) use any shimmery white you have to highlight the inner-corner, blending it into the crease and lower-lashline, and use the same to highlight under the highest point of the brow arch. As ever, I use the shimmery white in the Sleek iDivine Safari, Graphite, and Curious palettes.
  • Re-apply any of the above eyeshadows as necessary, if you overblended.
  • Line with black on the upper lashline and waterline. Try not to make it as fail as mine. I use Urban Decay 24/7 pencil in Zero, as always.
  • Prime lashes with Urban Decay Eyelash Primer, or apply false lashes, if you fancy it.
  • Top with a few million coats of Bourjois Liner Effect Mascara.

Lips

  • Exfoliate, I used a little MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator on a damp cloth. I have no idea if that's safe or not.
  • Apply Urban Decay Lip Primer (lip balm would do, but I don't have one. Nope. Not a one.)
  • Apply Barry M Lip Paint in 100.
  • Top with MAC Lipglass in Delicate Crush.

And done! In reality, this was a bit messier. I stupidly tried to combine soft sparkly shades with incredibly bright mattes, which ended up overpowering the others. The Hot In The City collection totally rescued me, and I can't recommend those highly enough. The colours are fantastic, but the finish is great, too. They were pigmented enough to blend perfectly over existing eyeshadow which had gone wrong and overpowered the rest, without changing colour or becoming muddied. The collection is limited and currently encoring - it's only there until January 2nd! Buy it now! Run!

The must-have shades are: Italian Ice, Neon Lights, Coney Island, Return to Tiffany's, Swelter, and Girl's Night Out. Gridlock is really nice, too.

Oh, and my scarf was a gift from my now-ex, it's a beautiful piece of rainbowhappy which came from Shanalogic.

A note on the FOTD title - I know, I normally don't explain these, but the thought process behind this one is even more oblique than usual. It comes from the biblical explanation of rainbows, essentially - ahem - God's promise that he'll never try to wipe us all out with a flood again (I guess it was a divine soft-reset? Hold the shoulder buttons and hit start+select...) rather than, you know, light shining on water droplets in the atmosphere causing a visible spectrum of light, or anything silly like that.

Anyway, that led me to thinking about the Tool song, Ænima, with the lyrics:
Learn to swim.
'Cause I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
And, so you have the title. Best learn to swim, just in case. But thank God for rainbows, eh? No pun intended.

That looks absolutely stunning. I've tried doing a rainbow eye and I've never managed to get an even transition between the colours without losing their clarity.
And your skin looks amazing, I need to get some of that Diamond stuff.

Therein lies the tricky part, Cucum.

The epoxy means I can apply it dry and still get pigmentation, which makes them easier to blend and easier to clean the brush than it would be if I applied them wet. The key is kinda to apply them individually, and blend very, very lightly, just on the edges. Then you need to re-apply each colour, re-blend, usually many, many times. I probably spent abour 3 hours on this, but I did fuck it up horrendously, so I'm not sure how much of that could have been avoided.

Practice makes perfect though ><

Oh, it looks so fabulous, you did such a great job on the rainbow look! I'm going to have to try pulling this off (though I'll probably use different colors, since I don't have all the same ones). <3

Ooh, pretty! :)

How essential would you say MAC Paintpots are as shadow primers? I finally have a little extra cash and I'd like to invest in some proper primers instead of scrounging around for substitutions. (Yay, alliteration! No, alleluia alliteration!) Otoh, if it's going to end up being about the same as something cheaper, I could put the difference into my Dragon Age fund. I'm having the same problem with TFSI. Thank cake Pixie Epoxy is so reasonably priced!

So pretty, and yes, all of those shades are in my cart now, thankyouverymuch! And now I need the Pixie Epoxy too. Darn you!

BTW Grey, I'm sure you could pull this off! No, I have no idea what you look like, but I firmly believe that "pulling off" looks is all in the attitude.

OK, sure, there are a few looks NO ONE can pull off, but that's different. This one is so pretty, and the rainbow effect has the added benefit of truly emphasizing any eye color!

Thanks, Kat! It's one of my favourites from Tool - probably the best sounding one, but Pushit has lyrics in I reeeeaally like near the end. Still, I love the, 'I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied...'

Ahh, Maynard. <3

Completely, Grey, and I'm sure you have enough mineral bright primary/secondary colours to do it. Rainbows are, I think, pretty wearable, you just need to keep MOST of it below the crease, have a good concealer handy for when you bugger it up (or, maybe that's just me) and try to match the colours you're going to use beforehand.

I didn't, therein lies my downfall. For instance I tried to use Fanclub and Agentorange together. Wooooah man, that did not work. I hope you've snagged some from the HITC already! And I know you've got the pixie epoxy. But really, try it! And don't be discouraged if it looks CRAP while you're doing it, I think they tend to look shit until you add black eyeliner.

Anastasia said...

Thanks Lindsey :D! And just kinda figure out the colours and swatch them to make sure one won't overpower the others and the finishes are compatible, since that's where I made my biggest mistake.

You should get HITC though, uumg <3 and the epoxy, if you don't have it! Epoxy means you can apply this dry, and that makes life a whole lot easier.

Thanks Rax! I LOVE my scarf. People keep staring at me when I wear it out, I guess because it's so bright, but it cheers me up when it's cold out.

Okay, I also wear it inside <_<

Corvida - what as your trouble with the TSFI? That's the only 'mainstream' primer I haven't tried. I've tried Urban Decay Primer Potion, Smashbox Photo Finish Lid primer and the Paint Pot, as well as Pixie Epoxy.

The epoxy isn't technically a primer, and it's definitely worth owning. You could use it as a primer, but sometimes it's not best with matte shades, or flat eyeshadows, so it's worthwhile having both. Personally, the paint pot is my favourite of the primers I've tried - I like that it's opaque, so it gives me some coverage even though it's darker than my skin is, but it makes my eyelid look better for application. It also has a stickier kind of finish than UDPP or the Smashbox primer, so it's better for sparklier, more complex shadows.

People disagree, though. Some prefer TSFI, some prefer UDPP, etc. A friend is sending me a sample of TSFI so that I can do a comparitive review on all of them at once, but if you want to ask specifics about either of them, drop me an e-mail? It's easier than back-and-forth in the comment box <3 lipsticksandlightsabers[at]gmail.com

Ohh yes Lo <_< I screw up *a lot*. You know I do =P So many looks don't even make it onto the blog because they crashed and burned, but then I tend to redo them later, better, once I've learned and whatnot.

Goooood good, Jessica. The epoxy is fantastic stuff. If you've never tried Fyrinnae's eyeshadows either, or heck, their lip lustres-- okay, so everything they make is pretty much "omgwhatamazing". And you get free shipping on $20. EVEN INTERNATIONALLY. Homg.

So yes <.< Get the epoxy, then spend another $13 on eyeshadows and <3 stuff for free shipping, and then be all omg<3 over Fyrinnae.

Japan is a totally amazing shade, as is Tyr, and all the arcane magics are incredible.

Thank you, Muse! It's not... patience so much as it is pigheadedness and anger. "Damnit, you will stay where I DAMN WELL PUT YOU, ORANGE!" etc. I'm the most impatient person in the world.

When I buy someone a gift, *I* can't wait for them to know what it is. I usually tell them immediately.

I've already heard my share of her looks not working, though everything she shows me is even more unique and impressive than the last look.

If I had the face of a female and eyes as beautiful as hers, you can bet Ana would demand I wear make-up.

And if she helped to make me look as gorgeous as her, I just might.

Ooh, if I asked you all the questions I have about primers, you'd start marking my emails as spam! I just bought Pixie Epoxy and Fyrinnae's actual primer, so soon I'll be able to play a bit more on my own. (I wear so much sparkly shadow that, even though Epoxy isn't *really* a primer, it'll be just as essential as one for me.) My problem with TFSI is the price. Yes, it works, and yes I get that a tiny tube goes a long way, but until my heating bill is less than the GDP of some small countries, I can't justify blowing $17 plus shipping on something when there might be a cheaper, equally effective alternative. Well, I just thought of a specific question about Painterly, so I'm off to email you after all!

5 January 2010 05:51

Anastasia said...

Haha, you'd be surprised how few questions I get about stuff, Cor.

I haven't gone a day without using the epoxy since I got it. I even use it with matte shades. I use it for everything. You might get along with Painterly since it lasts longer than TFSI or something else which dries up, but with the epoxy I don't think a great primer is really necessary, you could probably just use foundation.
