Troubleshooting

Over the past few months I've discovered a bunch of new products which have become daily staples. Rather than waiting ages to review them all, I figured I'd do my own take on a 'my top products' kind of thing, and show you all what I'm using, why I'm using it and what it does.

I'd like to note that every single item I mention here I bought with my own money. Of the companies listed here, Sassy Minerals and Aromaleigh have sent me free samples (although the Rocks! eyeshadows mentioned I bought myself) and both of those companies I'm a paying customer with, anyway. I don't even get anything for referral/affiliate links. Clear? Good.

The 1337 badge of honour.

1337 Things are my own holy-grail products. When I review a product, it scores out of 5. Generally speaking, products with 0-1 are utterly rubbish and do nothing at all, 2s tend to do something, just not what they were supposed to do, 3s do what I expect them to do, 4s do what I was hoping they'd do, and 5s do not only what they say they do, what I expected, what I hoped for, but also do something else I wasn't even thinking to hope for. 1337 Things are 5s, and that's a tall order.

You don't see this very often.

I certainly haven't tried every product in existence, however, and everyone is different. So don't rush out and buy things just because I love them so much I'm hoarding them in case of nuclear war.

Skincare

  • Cleanser - Bliss Sleeping Peel Cleansing Cream I got this incredibly cheaply at the local TK Maxx, and it's my first Bliss product. Whilst I like it as a cleanser, and it's helped clean up my breakouts a bit, I'm not completely amazed. It works fine, but I haven't found my ultimate holy-grail cleanser yet, and I don't think it's worth the price-tag.
  • Exfoliator - MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator It's the harshest/most thorough exfoliator I've found, and I like that. It definitely gets rid of all the dry skin, and leaves it feeling fresher, so it's the best exfoliator I've found so far. But it colours all my cloths black and might be too much for people with sensitive or broken skin. Best I've found so far, but I'm not completely blown-away by it, either. Worth a try, if you're looking.
  • Toner - Lancome Tonique Douceur I love this stuff. I use a lot of toner, and this doesn't dry my skin out or leave it feeling sticky like nearly every other toner I've tried. It's a shame it's so expensive, because I go through it pretty quickly. Haven't found anything better yet, would love a cheaper alternative, but I love how it leaves my skin feeling.
  • Make-Up Remover - Lancome Bi-Facil Again, expensive, but definitely does the job. Sweeps off even the toughest eye make-up without the need for tugging and pulling, although it leaves my skin feeling a little greasy, so you'd want to rinse off afterwards. I hear Clean & Clear do a great dupe of this which is around $5 or so, but it isn't sold in the UK. This is a 1337 Thing.
  • Moisturiser - Clinique Moisture Surge I'm really liking this, but I have limited experience with expensive skincare products, so I'm not claiming it's a holy-grail type product. It's nice, very moisturising, light, and it doesn't leave my skin feeling heavy or greasy, but rather clean and silky. However, nor does it make my skin look better, and it doesn't have an SPF. So it's what I'm using, but at £30 a pop I don't know if I won't switch to something else once it's all gone.
  • Troubleshooter - Guinot Créme Red Logic Holy-grail product this is. I'd give this endorsement as one of my 1337 Things. It's a green cream which goes on before moisturiser, day and night, and is a regular new step in my skincare routine now. Not only does it help eliminate redness because it's green, but it helps to reduce redness long-term if you use it often. I was a bit skeptical, considering it contains a lot of herbal/homeopathic ingredients that make my inner-cynic go "Hmm", but I really notice a difference using it, so it must contain something aside from the gratuitous herbs which actually does something.

Primers

  • Face - Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Complexion Primer Potion God, that's a mouthful. There's raves on this and people who don't like it, so it's very much up to your skin-type. For me, this is 1337 Thing I can't get enough of. It blurs my pores a bit, gives me this great smooth, but not chalky canvas to work with, and most importantly it never fucks up my foundation like a lot of other primers do when I apply too much or don't wait in between. Every other primer I've ever used, I've messed up doing something wrong when I apply my foundation, and it's never happened with this. It's so hassle-free and seems to give me the same results I love every single time I use it.
  • Lips - Urban Decay Lip Primer Potion When they came out with all their primers, I wondered if they were just milking the popularity of their eye primer. They aren't. Somehow, Urban Decay have cracked the formula for making awesome primers. This has some SPF, and it goes on weird. It feels like rubbing a wax crayon on my lips. But, if I use a cheaper, thinner lipstick like NYX over it, it suddenly hides all the imperfections in my lips and makes it go on much smoother, so I love it. I'd buy it again, if only to use with my many cheaper NYX lipsticks and get coverage from them like I get with thicker, smoother MAC lipsticks.
  • Lashes - Urban Decay Eyelash Primer Potion Seeing a theme yet? Seriously. Urban Decay, share your secret with the rest of the class. It's an eyelash primer like any other, except it has those little fibers in that cling to your lashes and make them look longer. And boy, do they ever. They're small enough to not irritate my incredibly-easy-to-irritate eyes, and it gives me the benefit of a fiber-mascara except, I can use it with any mascara. Score.
  • Eyes - MAC Paint Pot in Painterly Didn't see that coming, did you? I'm a recent Paint Pot convert, I've loved UD's Primer Potion up until now, but I really like the slightly stickier base that the Painterly pot gives me, and the opaque colour blends nicely with my foundation and covers the veins in my eyelids. It's a difficult choice between them, but since I'm using sparklier shades lately with a lot of giltter, the Paint Pot wins out. 1337 Thing, thank you very much. If you haven't tried either, I recommend trying both and choosing for yourself, though, since it's pretty close-run and they're both great.

Brushes

  • Foundation - MAC 191 and MAC 187. I learned this trick from a MAC MUA I saw last month and I'm astounded at how well it works. Previously, my liquid foundation just sat on my skin and didn't look so great. Now, I dab a little on in places I need it using the 191 brush, then grab the clean/dry 187 and buff it in in quick circles. Do it everywhere. Be amazed. For face brushes, I can't beat MAC. GOSH do a 187 dupe but it sheds like crazy. Both 1337 Things, just a shame they're pricey.
  • Face Powder - The MAC 187 for lightly dusting finishing powders again, MAC 168 for blush (I have chubby cheeks. Yes, you know I do. Applying blush to the apples makes me look like a balloon, so I sweep it over the cheekbones with this beauty) and Silk Naturals Ultimate Kabuki (which can be found other places, too) for mineral powder foundation, because it's the softest, most dense, gorgeous little kabuki in the world. 1337 Things, all of them.
  • Eyeshadow Application - GOSH Flat Eyeshadow brush, which is a dupe for MAC 239, except better. It's 1/3 of the price, it's less scratchy and it's easier to clean, but it does the job just as well and doesn't get stained into the bargain. Buy it, you'll love it. Buy ten. Totally 1337.
  • Eyeshadow Blending -Revlon Contour Shadow brush, it's a lot like the MAC 217, but thinner and more tapered, which I like because I like being more precise. I'll happily call both 1337 Things, but I reach for the cheaper Revlon brush more.
  • Eyeliner - MAC 208 Angled Brow Brush I'm actually using a cheaper angled brush, but it isn't all that great because the bristles are starting to stick out. Really, any eyeliner brush that doesn't shed and is this shape works perfectly with gel eyeliner. The wider it is, the shorter line you have to draw yourself, although that can make more precise work more difficult. Yeah, I've tried the bent Sonia Kashuk one, angled is better. If you've been using a round, thin eyeliner brush, try one of these (or even your brow brush) instead and then tell me how completely right I am and that you'll never, ever doubt me again.
  • Eyebrows - Ecotools Angled Eyeliner Brush How weird is it that I do it that way around? I don't know. They're interchangable. Find an eyebrow/eyeliner brush this shape you like and buy two. Sorted. Ecotools brushes are really nice though, so check this out - soft, no shedding, and lovely smooth bamboo handles, plus pretty cheap.

Face Basics

  • Foundation - Estée Lauder Double Wear I wear their lightest cool shade, "Shell". It's still a little bit on the dark side for me, so I tend to add a dollop of Illamasqua Rich Foundation in the absurdly pale 105. MAC don't make a foundation shade light enough for me (although I hate MAC foundation, so I wouldn't wear it if they did), and I've tried a lot of them. I love the Double Wear because it can survive a tornado (disaster-proof is what today's busy woman needs from her make-up; do you want to be re-applying in the middle of a twister? Didn't think so.) and has a nice matte finish with great coverage. The Illamasqua Rich Foundation formula is great too, and something very different from every other foundation out there, but 105 is insanely pale (if it's your shade, I don't know how you're alive or if you know what the sun is). Jessica told me it would be too pale, and I didn't listen, because I'm an alabaster idiot. It's the colour of milk. Still, it's great for lightening my Double Wear up a bit. 1337 Thing? I'm not sure, but it's definitely my favourite so far.

Eyes

Some of my favourite Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic colours.

  • Eyeshadow - Aromaleigh (particularly Rocks!), MAC Pigments, Sleek iDivine Palettes and some of the Sassy eye candy shimmers. It varies dramatically, colour to colour, but my top four greens all come from Aromaleigh (Estranged, Greenhell, Ozone and Trillium), Sassy are really impressing me with their sparkly complex shades lately, and MAC and Sleek are longtime favourites.
  • Highlighter - MAC Shroom I finally tried it, and now I get why everyone goes on about it. Perfect highlight, just the right shade, just the right amount of shimmer, great for blending out other colours on paler girls and highlighting at the highest arch point on darker ones.
  • Eyeliner - Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil In Zero, because I fail horribly at liquid. It's my favourite pencil, and definitely my go-to 1337 Thing eyeliner. I'm a big fan of the MAC Fluidlines too, and often use those on my waterline even though I'm not supposed to.
  • Mascara - Bourjois Liner Effect & Lancome Virtuose I mix mascaras. I always mix mascaras, because I've never found a mascara which does everything I want. You get mascaras which give you long, thin, spaced out lashes and no clumping, and you get mascaras which give you thick, volumised lashes and sometimes curl. What you don't get as macaras which do all of those things. You simply don't. So why not use one from each camp? Bourjois Liner Effect is my favourite length-and-separation mascara and looks wonderful on my lower-lashes. Lancome's Virtuose, while pricey, gives them great lift and curl after the fact, and added drama. Neither are 1337 Things, since they don't do it all.
  • Eyebrows - Illamasqua Brow Cake in Thunder. I don't know if it's the most amazing brow powder in the world, as I've only ever used two (previously the MAC Brow Shader, which was too red). I like it, though, and Illamasqua's customer service is fantastic. I like that you get a huge amount of it for the price, and that the packaging has a little mirror inside the compact lid, too. Thunder is a great universal shade and if you're brunette and have no clue what to do with your eyebrows, check this out. I use it by spritzing a little MAC Fix+ (mostly so I have something to do with my Fix+) on my brush first. 1337 Thing? No, but I like it all the same.

Lips

  • Treatment - Sleek Pout Polish It's almost perfect. It's almost 1337, it just isn't quite there. More colours, more opaque, no vanilla taste. Then it'll be there. Still, for the price, it's fantastic, although I haven't tried it next to MAC's Tendertones, it's a handy thing to have in my bag and I try not to leave without it. It's one of those lip products you enjoy putting on. I'm keen to try Sara Happ's Lip Slip, too.
  • Lipstick - MAC Lipsticks Without a doubt. For colour, pigmentation, smooth application, MAC lipsticks can't be beat. Very 1337, I only wish they did more dramatic shades. Still, I know a MAC lipstick is going to be great quality. For unusual colours or something I won't wear as often, I'll go with a NYX Round Lipstick because they're so affordable, have great pigmentation (they're just thinner than MAC, thus won't cover imperfections like MAC lipsticks will) but I'll have to use them over primer, on exfoliated lips and usually under gloss. MAC lippies remove the hassle, but cost several times more.
  • Lipgloss - Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss I love MAC Lipglasses too, because they give my lips a smoother, plumper look to them, but I can't beat Illamasqua's pigmentation. If you hate sticky glosses, you'll hate them, but I prefer them sticky. They go on thick, and they're not really glossy (which, again, I prefer) and the colour is incredible. The website lies, because they are sticky and they're not that shiny, but they are fantastic and I love them.

Tl;dr? Sorry for the walloftext. I'm having one of those moments when I realise just how much crap I put on my face. Of course, none of that up there is crap, but you know what I mean.

So that's everything that I'm using regularly right now, although there's a lot more I'm still testing and trying out. I'll do full, exhaustive reviews on everything I've marked up here as being a 1337 Thing (and sort my blog labels out one day, when I remember how to delete them), but it'll take me sometime to get around to it.

Feel free to ask questions about anything in particular, suggest stuff to me if you have a moisturiser you love or know a good dupe, in addition to the comments you guys usually leave (especially you, Grey, who hunts down my obscure references, none for you in this one!).

My comment might be slightly... uninformed, but I have to ask.

Do you really use all this stuff? All the time??

My face encounters 3 things on a regular basis: jojoba oil and moisturizer before bed, and mascara. No primers (which I didn't even know existed, honestly) or primpers or potions or pots or anything. If there is lipstick or eyeshadow involved, it goes straight from the container, possibly onto my finger, and then onto my face.

I guess my question is more, does one need all these things? Not the specific products, but the stages of things? The particular brushes? And so on?

I feel like I take good care of my looks, but I'm blown away. Do you use everything every day, or just some things some days?

Yep, I use them all. One of each, every day if I do a full face of make-up, which I often don't. If I have the time and the inclination, then certainly.

I don't think it's that unusual, either. Especially among big make-up enthusiasts, who own thousands of dollars worth of make-up (my own collection totals around $4k all-in) or make-up artists.

I've tried to list a product for every stage, and... Well, for me, all the stages are necessary. But everyone's different, you're not less of a woman or not taking care of yourself if you don't use an insane number of products! This is just what I use to achieve a look I like. Somedays I skip lip products entirely, or don't bother doing eye make-up if I'm in a hurry. I always use primers, just because I really notice the difference they make to application.

So when I do a full face of make-up, if I'm going out and I have the time, yes, I use all that, and usually about 5+ different eyeshadows. If I'm going out and I don't have time to do it all, I'll just do the skincare/face basics and leave with a fresh base. Sometimes I'll do one quick eyeshadow colour, highlight and mascara, without eyeliner, or lip products.

If you're interested in make-up as a hobby, then it's worth looking into - especially the brushes. Brushes and primers were things I never considered before I got really into make-up, but now I wouldn't do it without them, but that's not to say people can't look great and achieve good results without them.

Oh, I exfoliate only twice a week. If that, er, helps any?

Go Anastasia. That was marathon blogging!

I think I'll try the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator now. I've been looking for something harsh and rawr.

For a makeup remover, I suggest maybe trying a basic oil like extra virgin olive oil or jojoba oil. I tried the olive oil last night to remove waterproof mascara = amazing. Jojoba oil did not agree with my face though, when I tried to use that for a period of time. I did that in August and only just got over the continuous break out on my chin. >.<

What did you think of the other UDFP? I thought it pretty much did shit, might as well use a luminizer under the Pore Perfecting one.

Thanks Lo! It was pretty long. I'm a bit miffed I wrote so much and didn't even get to cross anything off my huge blogging list.

Oh well, I always find "best product" posts helpful, so I hope some of you do.

The other UD face primer - well, it was OK. I'm not keen, but I really hate the dewy skin look, it just isn't my preference, I want to be matte. And Illamasqua make the best one (Satin Primer) anyway. So it's not for me, but I know Jen over at ABS loves it, and hates the pore perfecting one, which is why I think this is very individual-skin-based.

I shall try your oil suggestion! Particularly as I've been out of Bi-Facil for ages and can't justify the price to buy more.

I recently tried UDPP, and while it worked in two of the quickie-looks that I did, I also prefer the paint pots for general application. The paint pots hold the minerals but let them blend better, as you said. Do you tend to use just the one color, or have you tried using any of the other colors of paint pot?

I haven't ever used a primer on my lips. Maybe I'll give that a try...

Thanks for the list!!

I love the 1337 concept, that's geeky enough for me :-)
We do have lot of these in common, like Illamasqua intense lipglosses and brow powder, BB concealer, Love Rock blush, 24/7 pencils... So I'm probably likely to love the other stuff, I'll pick some from your list when I'm over with that bloody project 10 pan!

Gosh, I feel so... ungroomed! :P Brilliant post - I always love hearing about super-pale foundations in particular. We don't get much sun in Bristol.

By the way, I got the Virgin Vie lipstick I ordered with the code you provided today. I went for the Sparkleberry one, and it turns out it's EXACTLY the same colour as my lips are anyway, but slightly shimmery. The price was right though - thanks very much for sharing the code!

hmm the two Illamasqua intense glosses (Fierce and Repluse) i have are both very glossy (the black one is like shiny latex) and not that sticky. Though i found not to put any primer on (i use benefits one) as it seems to congeal with the gloss.
I also really loving their lipsticks and found the Box shade beats any of the red MAC lipsticks i already own...although i do love my nude MAC lipsticks!
i need to try that purely cosmetics diamond finish powder...looks like the kind of finish i like -matt but glowy

LiAnn, Painterly and Rollickin' are all I've tried so far, and Rollickin' has a totally different finish so it doesn't work so well as a base.

I agree with you, though. Although I like how translucent UDPP is, I don't know, maybe I'll do a look using one on each eye and see. I want to pick up a Blackground PaintPot next, to see how colours look over that :]

Robyn, no problem. I'm sure I'll be raving about it in its own review, (the diamond powder in particular), I haven't really explored it that much yet.

I'll have to try applying half that, half something else on my face actually in front of a mirror. I really liked how I used it so far, but I'm doing all my make-up in a little compact mirror nowadays so I tend to miss the effect as I'm applying. I watched the EnKore video and got more intrigued, though, and it does feel amazing on, so I'm going to STUDY it! It's wonderful to see a MMU company that does more than just puts mica in jars - I love that you actually make your own, unique facial products that are different to everything out there and go for FDA approval, as well.

Cat, right now I'm in pyjamas, with my hair in a ponytail and no make-up on, if that helps.

Which formula lipstick was it? I got a Pure Radiance one, I picked the pink one, but they ran out so they sent me the red which wasn't in the offer (only, free, woot). I would've preferred pink, I think, but it's a really nice sheer pinky red with an amazing glide, glossy formula, so I really like it. I didn't like the gloss I got at first (super sheer) but I do, now, just because it makes my lips look all smooth. I wish it had more colour to it, though!

Sakara, I only have Fury and Absorb, so that's good to know. They were both more like a really thick stain, pretty darn sticky, but I love them.

Must be different with different colours, then! I want Indulge, next. I hope they come out with more colours and such frequently, I really adore their glosses. I'm DEFINITELY going to try their lipsticks, now. I've been on the fence about it, but after that endorsement there's a few I'll be checking out.

StudioTools has a great, and cheap fiber optic brush which sells for $2-8 at Target. I'm not sure if you have Targets in the UK, but perhaps you could get a friend to mail one over?

A review and comparision can be found here: http://ladylostris.blogspot.com/2009/06/another-187-dupe-and-studio-tools.html

I picked one up last time I went to the states, and I love it. I don't have the MAC or GOSH to compare with though.

Yay! Loved the post- you know me: Always hunting for the latest greatest. I'm gonna have to hunt down that anti- redness treatment now, I've never seen it in the states!

BTW, don't feel bad about not takng my word that the Illamasqua 105 was going to be too fair- I only know because I ordered it too! When you've lived your whole life and never found a foundation too light, it's hard to believe it until you see it yourself! I've been wanting to try the Creme makeup & get a more suitable shade in the Rich, but I noticed that there's quite a gap between the milky white 105 (which I really can't believe matches anyone) and the next shade (120 I think) which looks like it'll be too dark.

Illamasqua is actually tooling around with their shade range, the new versions should be available early in the new year, so anyone considering them may want to wait a few months to see what they come up with!

Lo said...

120 is definitely wayyyy too dark, Jessica. >.<
I understand that the one above 120 (125 or 130, can't remember) is actually lighter, but is very yellow.

I guess if you want to spend $60 and have the two to mix together it might work, but I can't justify that.

heya oh yeah...they have SO many reds...Box is the one they always recommend. Got to Speak to Mika, one of their top artists, who said, Box will suit everyone and also has that slight blue tinge that makes your teeth whiter looking. It so does!

I like the intense glosses aswell as because they have a pure pigment to them, you can add say a white shimmer gloss to them and you get another colour -
Fierce goes a lilac and Repulse a gumental silver.

if i could i buy so much from them mainly because i love their ethics and support of the Sophie foundation!

i have to mix Illamasqua rich foundations the 105 which is the nice pink white (good for certain photoshoot looks) and the 120 which is near my right level of depth, but slightly too yellow. Once mixed half half i get a perfect shade.125 appears quite greyish on my skin.
I too would love to see a shade inbetween those 105 and 120...i know they listen to their customers so maybe eventually that'll happen

Thanks for sharing Ana. And thanks for saving me some money. I was thinking of buying the Illamasqua foundation as it seemed pale enough for me, but now I think it would be too pale. And I never imagined that could happen.

I almost regret not buying the Volcanic Ash Exfoliator now though. It sounds really good but I heard the packaging is small and I couldn't justify the price.

But I may try the MAC Paint Pot. I'm running out of my UDPP and since it's not sold here I'm looking for a more easily available alternative. I use pigments a lot so a stickier base like that would work better.

My thoughts exactly, Jessica. The next shade down is uber dark and uber yellow. I'm glad to hear they're changing the range a bit - I'm surprised the foundations make such a leap from the uber-white to the normal skin-tone.

I really couldn't believe it when I swatched it on my hand. I should post that swatch and review it properly!

Oooh Sakara, if I can make Fierce a lilac I might get that. I picked Fury because I thought Fierce would be too bright :[ but I want a lilac gloss!

That's what I'm hoping for too, Sakara. I think 120 would be too dark/waaay too yellow for me, so I'll cross my fingers and keep working on my bumper bottle of Estée Lauder and maybe they'll bring one out.

Well thanks for your comment, Cat :]

I haven't tried the Moisture Kiss, although I like the pure radiance one I got - very moisturising, it goes on like a gloss. I find I do like Virgin Vie products, but when they're around the same price as MAC, I know which I'd buy.

I can't wait to hear what you think of the MAC brushes vs the GOSH ones. I wouldn't be without my 217, but I do prefer my GOSH to the MAC 239, it's so much easier to clean x.x

Muuuuch too pale, Gio. I had the same thing! Mine was a gift from the gorgeous Jessica, though.

The volcanic ash exfoliator isn't like "omg amazing" skin treatment, it's just a good exfoliator. I'm sure any "harsh" exfoliator would probably be just as good.

I do recommend the paint pot, in that case. UDPP is a lot lighter in colour, which I like, but I actually like having the coloured base since it covers up my veins and it does feel stickier to me. I compared UDPP, the Paint Pot and Smashbox photo finish lid primer on my hand yesterday by applying eyeshadow and then rubbing it to see what stuck longest.

Applied, all the swatches looked the same, so none of them alter the colour. UDPP was the palest on my skin, then smashbox, then the paint pot. After I scrubbed at them all (dry, with a towel), the colours on the paint pot stuck on the longest. After washing with soap and water, it seemed like the UDPP colours were the ones mostly still left, but they were pretty much all gone by that point.

So there isn't much in it, but for loose pigments or sparkles - stickier is better. I hope to get Fyrinnae's epoxy and test that, soon.

Thanks Tianne! I'll have to look into that and see what I think.

Thanks for the recommendation! <3

So I LOVE your blog....just wanted to say. I've been lurking for ages and finally decided to comment. >__>;

I definitely cleanser, tone, moisturize, and occasionally ex foliate with sugar scrubs not to mention I have the LUSH ultrabland for removal of makeup (I used to only use petroleum jelly lol.) But even though I am hella into makeup, I don't own many brushes. Mostly because I never know what brush to use for achieving what kind of look I want. :( Is this something that comes with time? Do you pick this up via youtube videos? or online tutorials? or makeup classes? Thanks!

Thank you, Kate :3

Brush knowledge comes with time, videos and tutorials. I started off only using a very small eyeshadow brush, and staring at my MAC 217 and 232 in amazement wondering what on earth anyone used them for. I used to hate my 224. Now I use these constantly.

Part of it is seeing what others used to create a specific look that you want to achieve, so videos are useful, but part of it is working out for yourself uses for your brushes. A lot of people approach it slightly differently, although I would say I think there are some universal "you need these" brushes, which is the duo-fiber stippling brush (MAC 187), the flat angled brush (for eyebrows or gel eyeliner), the stiff shader brush (MAC 232, for packing base colour onto the lid) and the stiff dome brush (MAC 217, for shading in darker colours, blending and crease colours).

I also think that a pencil brush (MAC 219) and the MAC 224 (I don't know what type to call this, it's a much bigger, softer tapered blending brush) are useful, too.

It comes with time as you gain experience. Some people buy brush sets and others just narrow down which individual brushes they need and build them up over time.
