EOTD: Yes, You Can Sail The Seven Seas

In the US, now, there's a new whatsit you'll all probably be aware of which says bloggers have to disclose when they've been given a product for free. Since I'm English it doesn't apply to me, but I'm going to do it anyway, because I like to be upfront, and I'd hope my blog is synonymous with honest writing, among other things.

I've supported Beauty From The Earth in the past, and I'm even happier to now that they're labeling all their repackaged products as "Primary Pigments" and discontinuing a great many of them in favour for the 175+ colours they've created themselves. Crystal Lampe, BFTE's owner, sent me a bunch of stuff from the new line they've got coming out, which features some really nice, muted matte eyeshadows.

Really digging Patriot, Main Stage, Yo Momma, Evergreen and Panurple.
Swatched in natural light (no flash) over primer.

Matte eyeshadows can be tricky to get right, because typically they're hard to blend or get good pigmentation with. My favourite BFTE shade is matte, though (Mint) so I've always liked their matte formula. The new colours are no exception, and although they're not as bright as I usually go for, I really like the kind've military feel they have. Particularly, I was really into the slate blues, so I used them in this EOTD just to show the shades off a bit.

Yes, You Can Sail The Seven Seas - Step-by-Step

This is a horrendous picture, and also the only one I have, sadly.
So ignore the hair/grossness, please.

This looked really nice on, it's a shame I didn't get any better pictures, but I was being strong-armed out the door to B&Q to buy wood. That wood you see in the background there.

  • Apply primer! Mineral make-up, like any loose powder, has adhesion issues and mattes are worst of all, so a good sticky primer is a must. I used Urban Decay's Primer Potion here.

  • Using a MAC 239 (or my GOSH Flat eyeshadow brush) foil (apply wet) Main Stage all over the lid. Dry the brush and re-apply it dry, over the top, to cover any gaps.

  • Using a stiff-dome brush (MAC 217, or the Revlon Contour Shadow brush is great for this) shade in Patriot, dry, into the crease, blending out the Main Stage with it and working it into the crease and outer-half of the lid.

  • With the same brush, use Night Train to darken the crease/outer-V and blend it out toward the brow-bone.

  • Highlight the brow-bone, I used MAC Shroom and then the lightest shimmery white shade from the Sleek iDivine Safari palette under the very highest point of the eyebrow arch, both with the MAC 219 (Gosh Round eyeshadow brush).

  • Add eyeliner to top & waterline (Urban Decay 24/7 in Zero). You can't see this, but I also then applied Night Train with the MAC 219 brush under the eyes, along the lower-lashline and blended with a second, clean 219 (any small brush will do) to add some smokiness.

  • For lashes, I used Urban Decay Lash Primer and L'Oreal Telescopic Explosion mascara, but they look pretty crappy in that picture.

Eyebrows were Illamasqua brow cake in Thunder (which I love) and I think my lips got neglected entirely.

I always find matte eyeshadows pretty tricky to work with, but I think BFTE do a good job with these. I really dig the colours, because I love the greyish slate-hue they all have, and the pigmentation is great. With a little practice, they're blendable and although they look a bit clumpy in the jar, they go on creamy, rather than chalky and washed-out like a lot of mattes. They do take more work than the shimmery eyeshadows, and I still prefer BFTE's shimmery products, but nevertheless, it's one of the best matte formulations I've tried.
Even so, though, if you're unused to working with mattes, mineral make-up or make-up in general, they're not very novice-friendly.

Crystal tells me they've got over 50 new matte shades (in addition to the great many gorgeous shimmery ones), eyeshadow pressing medium, and have more lip products, brush cleaner etc in the works. They're also working on a new website - I've seen a sneak peak of it, and I think it looks great and seems pretty easy to navigate.

Honestly, after the whole repackaging-LimeCrime-blaaaagh thing I wasn't sure how I felt about BFTE, particularly as I'd supported them publicly in the past and have bought around 50 of their eyeshadows. I've had days when I've worn BFTE's shimmer eyeshadows out in a look, and people have stopped to ask me if I'm wearing MAC, so I've always been pleased with the quality of the product, but had concerns about repackaging.

Crystal personally took the time to comment on my blog (you can find it, if you look hard enough) telling me that yes, some of their stuff was repackaged, as that was what they started selling, but that they've moved on and had over 100 of their own colours, as well as a ton of other unique products. Now they've discontinued the vast majority of their repackaged colours entirely, and labelled the ones left, so I'm really chuffed at the direction they're moving in, and I've already got my eye on some of the new shades.

That's a gorgeous slate blue. Need to keep that one in mind if I ever get to make a purchase from them (stupid holidays coming up, hehe).

Isn't it just? Patriot is gorgeous, it'd work well with gold or with an actual red/white/blue look, too.

Slate blue is one of my favourite colours, so I'm loving these.

Oh my Goodness, wow! I know where to go next time I need mineral e/s!!! And I think you look good on the pic!!

By the way I have a question for you: what can you and can you not press with alcohol and what does require a special mixing medium? I want to press the mineral e/s and pigments I like the most to use them easily but I don't know where to start!

Thanks Muse! It wasn't my best hair day...

As far as I know there's no hard rules for what you can and cannot press. Some things work, some don't. I know people have a lot of success with say, MAC pigments, more so than they do with mineral make-up - when it comes to mineral stuff I expect it varies dramatically from manufacturer to manufacturer. I haven't tried pressing my pigments yet (I prefer loose powder) but I know how it's done, and there are a lot of kits (which are pretty much rubbing alcohol) out there. As far as I know, the kits are really just for convenience, I haven't heard of anything having greater success with a kit than with ingredients they gathered separately. In fact, I remember reading on Nessasarymakeup.com about it and she rated the kit she used much lower than simply doing it herself.

Results can vary, though! If you're unsure, maybe go with a kit, but if you have easy access to the individual components, I very much doubt there's anything else in the kit you need for it. Just be sure you don't press ALL your stuff at once, you should definitely do a test batch with something you're not so crazy about.

Any kind of matte eyeshadows can be such a bother, B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful have gorgeous (and ridiculously expensive) shimmers, but for the matte/satin shadows you need a really stiff brush.
I haven't tried anything from BFTE, but I'm very tempted right now. Surprisingly by Always a Bridesmaid and Black Cherry, which are not what I'd normally wear.

I feel like if a company is honest about things, the way BftE is, I feel pretty good buying from them. I think it's commendable, all the changes she's made.

I love the look you did. Patriot, Evergreen, Panurple and Main stage look really appealing to me from what you swatched.

I've never really worn matte colors before. (i'm addicted to sparkles)but I might try some now. The dark blue and yellow look wonderful. I've been looking for a good yellow for some time.

I'm always looking for matte shadows. It's one of those things I'm always hunting down : demi lashes, black eyeliner that won't smudge, pants that fit (I have boy hips) and pink lipstick.

I'm also really weary of them being re packagers, although you can pretty much be assured anything matte is a custom creation.

I might wait for the new site and give them a go, as it is I have so much to review already I need to get through.

But anyway, your hair is awesome, stop playing, gurl.

Wow, those mattes look so pigmented! I hate mattes that look pigmented in the package but have really low color payoff when applied. Thanks for swatching! Really lovely EOTD too.

Hi, I've been following your blog for about a month, and this is my first comment!

I'm 22 and I'm just now starting to wear more makeup than just tinted moisturizer, eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss so I'm kind of weary about how much makeup is appropriate for work, weekend, day/night, etc.

I'm a dental assistant in the US which qualifies me as a dental nurse in the UK... would mattes be better for work, or are shimmery eyeshadows OK? I love this look, and fortunately I work for a dentist that doesn't limit us to subdued makeup (like most dentists here do), so I want to start exploring without going too over the top!

Sorry, I think that was one big run-on question! I'm just trying to make sense of all these different eyeshadow finishes!

Thanks,

Kristen

I agree, Cucum, they can be a total pain, even from MAC and Sleek, two companies I really like.

Honestly I think BFTE's mattes are easier to use than some matte MAC pigments, which is saying quite a lot. Mint in particular, that favourite mint green of mine, is wonderful. Of all of these I noticed Panurple was perhaps a bit chalkier than the others, but I've yet to try using it in a look so I'm reserving judgement on that one. I was really pleased with the ones I used in this, though - and Always a Bridesmaid (don't you love the names?) and Black Cherry are another two which blended easily.

It's a reaally pretty kind of navy slate blue webcake, I can think of a lot of uses for it.

In fact, I want to do a military camouflage look using these ;x

That's how I'm feeling about it, too, Phyrra. I love Panurple in the pot, I'll have to try doing a look with it and see how it goes.

Check the site, though, because seriously they've added SO many new mattes and other colours.

Zoe, in my opinion the best yellow IN THE WORLD is MAC Going Bananas, but sadly it's limited edition and was with the C-Shock collection so it's damn hard to find.

It has a little shimmer in it, too. In terms of a matte yellow, I'm really digging this one, although I like to use yellows to brighten up looks over other colours, so I'm gonna have to try it in a look to see how pigmented it goes on over other shadows.

In terms of the repackaging I'm really chuffed with the direction they're going in, Grey. It's no different from, say, Aromaleigh now (and I know how you feel about them :p ) considering they've discontinued most and labeled the rest.

Although Aromaleigh are getting rid of all of theirs entirely, but I don't think it'll be long before that happens, truthfully. I like BFTE's formula - I sent you that sample of Mint by them, remember? Try it out and see what you think.

8 November 2009 20:14

Anastasia said...

Cacau, isn't it a totally cute kind of military green? I find there's a shade of sage green EVERY COMPANY makes and this is just different enough from it to make me like it a lot.

8 November 2009 20:15

Anastasia said...

Ella, absolutely. I get that a lot, and I think it's because with mattes they add a lot of stuff in to make them chalkier, then they don't swatch well...

Mattes can be tricky to work with, granted, but even with my limited set up here (ahhh I'm doing all my makeup in a compact mirror) I managed OK. With practice I don't think anyone would have that much trouble using these, and I can't fault BFTE on pigmentation.

Axs - I pretty much feel the same way about them. I'm not scared to wear shimmer (although I don't like massive glitter chunks) and they're easier to blend, so I tend to go for shimmer, but I realllyyyy like these colours.

Panurple is the first one I saw and went "love it", but it felt a bit weird to swatch so I'd hold off on grabbing it until I try it in a look on its own and test it out.

Hey Kristen! I love it when people comment, so welcome welcome =D

I'm probably not the best person to ask about what's appropriate for work given that I'd wear lime green eyeshadow to work, but I can give you some tips.

Yes, matte shades might be considered more suitable, but I think in this day and age there's nothing wrong with a little shimmer. If I were you I'd go for more neutral shades with a shimmery finish or try out bolder mattes - I'd keep the bold colours/finishes low on the lid, i.e. on the eyelid themselves and not carry them above the crease, and make sure you've got a non-shimmery highlight colour to blend them out with.

Anyone can pull off insanely bright if they blend it out, so having a clean extra stiff dome brush (like the MAC 217) on hand to blend colours out with is really handy. Try something like MAC's Shroom as a highlight colour, because although it has a slightly shimmery finish, it's barely noticeable.

If your boss is a guy, I wouldn't worry too much. Honestly, I don't think he'd notice much beyond "Hey your eyes look nice" - just don't go too dramatically dark or bright, and don't pile on a ton of black eyeliner, since those are mostly the giveaways.

Other than that, though... Try pushing your look? Get a little bolder each day and experiment! As I say, I'd be sure to keep any bold colours or really shimmery eyeshadows on the lid and then blend into the crease with something more neutral, so you've got a little pop rather than glitter all over your face.

If you never have, take a look at Urban Decay's eyeshadows and their palettes, because seriously, their shimmer eyeshadows have the most... amazingly beautiful formula, they're so creamy and shiny and *gorgeous* you won't be able to resist using them.

I hope that helps? Aha, like I said - not an expert on what's appropriate! Take care on the eyeshadow placement though and start out slow and I think you'll be fine.

How do they work well alongside shimmers? I like to play with textures on my eyes, but my mattes are pretty weak when combined with other things I have.

I haven't tried that yet, Lo, since I'm pretty new to using mattes as well, but in my next EOTD with them I'll try using a mixture and see what I can do.

Thank you! That actually really did help- and luckily one of the few brushes I own is a MAC 217! I've already started playing around with some neutrals and upgraded to shimmery ones now- so far no negative comments at the workplace so I think I'll keep working up on the intensity and expanding my colors until the boss says no!

Anastasia said...

Oh, I'm really glad Kristen! You can try doing fairly neutral looks and then adding a pop with really bright or sparkly eyeliner, too.

Pretty much it's all things in moderation. If you go OTT on one thing, tone down something else. You can rock bright lipstick with neutral eyes, bright eyes with neutral lips, crazy eyeliner with simple shadow, etc etc. But absolutely, just keep pushing your luck until someone complains, aha.
