Sliced Bread Isn't Actually All That Great

It really isn't when you think about it, all it saves you is a knife and about 30-40 seconds per slice. Compared to modern medicine, plumbing, the internet or these brushes, sliced bread is pretty lame.

So, GOSH eyeshadow brushes - the best thing since way before sliced bread?

Product Review - GOSH Flat Eyeshadow Brush

Side-by-side with my (stained) MAC 239.

Price: £6ish (I can't remember exactly, and can't find out from google.) or $13.50 in the US.
Where?: Superdrug stores (UK), GOSH Americas.com (US)
Aesthetic: 4/5 Matte black handles, black ferrules, natural brown bristles don't stain easily.
Quality: 4.5/5 They feel wonderful, but lose half a point for being machine-made & not all identical.
Value: 5/5 Taking into consideration price vs quality, it beats the MAC 239.

What It Is:
The GOSH Flat Eyeshadow brush is flat shader brush made from light brown pony hair. It is an extremely close duplicate of the MAC 239, my preferred eyeshadow brush for packing colour onto the lid. Flat shader brushes are typically dense, with stiff bristles in a slightly domed, mostly squared-off shape, which capture a lot of product in the dense bristles and allow it to be packed tightly onto the lid. They're my favourite for general eyeshadow application because they give such a pigmented finish.

Blurry close-up next to the Smurfy 239.
GOSH vs MAC:
In comparison to the MAC 239, the GOSH brush has the same length handle, but the metal ferrule is about 1.5cm shorter. The handle is the same width, but doesn't taper toward the brush like MAC's does, and is a more satiny matte black. It doesn't list the name of the brush, just the brand.
The bristles are every so slightly longer and very slightly more domed on the GOSH version, but also considerably softer than the MAC 239 whilst maintaining the density. It seems to not fray and keep its shape better than the 239, and for some reason is easier to clean. I have no idea why it's easier to clean, but it is, and in addition, the bristles don't stain easily. I've had my 239 there for 10 months, cleaned it regularly but as you can see, it's now blue, even when it is clean.

I actually prefer using my GOSH flat eyeshadow brush over my MAC 239 now, because it feels softer on the lid but delivers the same eyeshadow payoff, and is easier & faster to clean.

What I Love About It:
I love the way it looks, the handle feels smooth and satiny, I like the all-black handle/ferrule because I think it looks chic and sleek. I love the shape and density which make it as effective as the 239 and deliver great colour payoff with minimum drop-out, but I love that the bristles are a bit softer on my skin and that it only takes about 2 swipes on a towel after applying some brush cleaner to clean this completely. I love the price, too - £6(ish) as opposed to £17 for the 239. I've also experienced no shedding with it, as I have with the larger GOSH face brushes.

What I Hate About It:
I wouldn't say "hate" but I'd prefer it if the brush were synthetic, rather than animal hair, and I'm assuming they're machine made. I don't know that they are (I searched, but couldn't find out) but considering it doesn't say they're hand-made (a selling point) I'm going to assume it, plus there are very slight discrepancies and differences from brush to brush. They still feel better than my MAC brushes though.

I'd also like it if the brushes had their name on handle, or a number. Given how incredibly messy most Superdrugs are (seriously, what's wrong with you guys? What do you do all day? Your displays look like crap) it can be very hard to work out which brush in the packet corresponds to which brush on the tester rack (although the testers are usually missing or in the wrong place) although that is more Superdrug's failing, rather than GOSH's.

(Incidentally, I really really hate the Europe Gosh website. It's made in Flash so it looks pretty, but is hard to navigate, has no online store, doesn't offer prices or stockists and just frustrates me. But that doesn't affect how awesome the brush is, which is very.)

Is It Really Worth It?:
Absolutely. This one brush is ever-so-slightly better than the MAC 239 and almost 1/3 of the price. I can't say how well it wears, yet, but I've certainly used/washed it several times and it's still going strong.

Would I Re-Purchase?
A thousand times yes! Next time there's a 3-for-2 offer I'm going to buy a lot more of these. If they were the same price as the MAC 239, I'd probably buy the 239, because I'm a bit of a snob, I guess. But I can't ignore that one MAC 239 = three of these, especially when I really prefer using this one.

Verdict:
So, all in all, the GOSH Flat Eyeshadow brush gets:

A whopping 5 out of 5 Internets...

...And coveted status as one of my 1337 things.

I want Gosh stuff so bad it hurts. In the US that want some crazy summ of your first born child and a pint of blood just for the pigments (which I wouldn't order anyway). I'm less then chuffed.

I wouldn't mind giving up my first born child so much. Maybe they could take the blood from the second kid, then I wouldn't need to worry about what to do with them.

I thought of you when I reviewed this since it's not vegan. But it's not like they hurt the ponies, they're just having a little itty bitty haircut, and they get brushed 'cause they malt anyway.

I'm sure GOSH pigments/eyeshadows are good, but I've never tried them since they're just out of my comfortable price range.

I am soooo frustrated that the belgian drugstores that distribute Gosh haven't understood the need for brushes yet. Sometimes they would have one of the eyeshadow brushes but nothing else. But well, next time I see them I'll remember to pick one!

Ana would you mind e-mailing me regarding our ongoing business? ;-) thanks!

Ok so I know absolutely NOTHING about geography but in my head I always imagined Denmark was really really close to Germany. And Belgium is like right next to Germany, right? Uh. I think?

I'm probably completely wrong. I used to think Belgium was the capital of Germany and was amazed when I found out it was an entirely different country. Geography really isn't my strongsuit, I'm convinced that Mexico is actually in Spain. It is.

I wasn't so impressed with the face brushes - I should review it so there's actually a comparison there - but the eye brushes, very yes. Definitely look for them though!

Sounds great- too bad we don't have them in stores here! It would actually cost pretty much the same for me to order these as it would to buy the MAC ones w/ my pro discount.

I do LOVE hearing about all of the awesome Brit stuff though (like Sleek, OMG!) Keep it coming!

The brush sounds great, I regret now not getting it last time I was in London. :( I remember looking at it and picking it up in my hand but in the end I decided to get one of the Gosh pigments instead. I'm not sure if it is just the shade I have or if they are all like that, but the color payoff sucks. It is really sheer and the powder doesn't stick to the lid well, not even if I use UDPP.

I agree with you about Superdrug. I prefer it to Boots as I think the makeup ranges are better and cheaper. Boots tends to have more high-end stuff. But Superdrug stands are way too messy, dirty and half-empty!

I have the round shadow brush, lip brush, small angled liner brush and the powder brush. I agree with you about the larger brushes, at least for the powder brush, It sheds and it's scratchy. Love my other brushes by them though!

Check if your Superdrug stocks Eco Tools, they are so soft! Too bad it's such a limited range :(

Nah... Germany is on the right side of Belgium.
Then above Belgium you have the Netherlands and if you go further up and cross a bit of see, you'll be in Danemark - zero connection with Germany.
:-))

Lol, Jessica. Well, technically they're not British, they're Danish, but yeah. Still, if I could buy MAC for that price with a PRO discount I would <_<;

I agree Gio! I haven't tried the GOSH pigments although I know Jangsara likes the effect powders.

We're in agreement about Superdrug vs Boots too. They have better stock but I hate shopping there, it's dirty, the staff are rude, unhelpful and completely clueless.

They have this incentive where you can go to their feedback website, fill out a survey on your last visit and get 10% off the next, which is cool though, because I can bitch about how effing bad it all is and then get money off!

Kirsty, I loooove the round brush, that review is coming next. It's strange that the face brushes are bad. You should pick up a flat eyeshadow brush when you're next buying from Superdrug.

My Superdrug doesn't stock eco-tools, and naturally the staff have never heard of it, have no idea which stores stock it, how to get it, order it, or feed themselves.

OHH. I got it mixed up with the Netherlands, I do that. Dutch, Danish, blaaaaah.

Hm, well you're close to NL at least! Their political leader (used to, anyway) looks like Harry Potter and they have very fast broadband and lax piracy laws!

Ana how did I miss all these new posts? I must have been hiding under a rock hoping my bosses wouldn't notice me.

After your review I think I definitely need to check out a few Gosh products - I love that they have a US site!

I'd love to chat more, but must get back to work before someone yells at me =X.

I plan to :D

Yeah, neither of the Nottingham stores do which is annoying. I was so excited when I visited my friend in York and found them!

13 August 2009 22:44

Anastasia said...

Jen, I did post them all in relatively quick succession!

The US prices are slightly higher, but not by much, and the US website is so much easier to use!

Anastasia said...

Oooh, man I love York. Gorgeous city.

I might do some digging and find a list of all the Superdrugs which stock them, if I do, I'll also post it on here. I'll do the same for Sleek and GOSH.

Hi Anatasia - wow! I wonder if I can get my hands on this in the US.

I love how the 239 picks up product so well, but there's this 1bristle on 1 side of the brush that pokes my eye like crazy. It's so annoying and scratchy!

Where have you been???
We miss you on MUG!!!!
What happened???

Jo - Great! There's nothing worse than recommending a product, then someone buys it and hates it, I'd feel terrible. Try the round eyeshadow brush too :D

19 August 2009 17:55

Anastasia said...

I feel exactly the same way, Didi. My 239 can be quite scratchy particularly on my inner corner and that makes my eye water, which is why I mostly stick to my GOSH brush now.

You can get them in the US, it costs a tiny bit more but on the plus side, the US website isn't as retarded as the UK one =D I linked to it back at the top of the post next to the price.

Hey Jxdinic, I left MUG a while ago. You can read why here http://makeupgeek.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23325

I see!!! I personally don't like it either and it does bother me as well sometimes, at least I can hear from you here on your blog. It is odd that the forum is locked. Why is that?? If it is not a big deal to aks to the question then why is it locked?? They do this alot and it is the one thing I HATE about MUG, they try to sweep things under the carpet at times.

I know, right? Way to prove my point there, MUG.

I picked this up after reading your review and I totally agree! I actually prefer it to my 239, I think it applies colour better! Will definately be getting a couple more when the 3 for 2 is back!

Anastasia said...

Whew, I'm glad. I always worry someone will follow my advice and completely hate it.

I, too, find myself reaching for it instead of my 239 every day, but I've also noticed how really handy it is to have both, when I do more complicated looks. Have you noticed how much easier it is to clean than the 239? I was marveling at that when I applied something wet yesterday.

27 August 2009 01:09

jobetterdays said...

It's definately easier to clean, I had a mass brush washing session yesterday! I think because the 239's bristles are white they stain so easily that cleaning is a total pain!

31 August 2009 00:22

Anastasia said...

I agree, but it also seems like my 239 simply traps more colour in it without then depositing it than my GOSH brush does. The 239 has more short bristles, so maybe that's why.

You may have tried it, I don't know, but I've recently started using the Superdrug own brand flat eyeshadow brush. Fraction of the price, and actually surprisingly good. Couldn't find it on the website though. Sorry!

Incidentally, I just found your blog, and I'm loving it. Bring on the geekery.
