This is my first ever tutorial! It's a photo tutorial because I still mess up too much to be comfortable doing video yet. I haven't done any tutorials yet because I felt like I didn't know enough to tell anyone how to apply their make-up - then I figured if people like a look that I do, it's not bad if I show them how I created it.
So this is my rainbow eyes look tutorial, I've highlighted all the products and brushes I used in bold so they're easy to pick out, but really you can just match the colours and use any brand.
1. Red
The rainbow goes Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet, but I tend to avoid indigo because it's a nonsensical colour. After I prime my eyelids with UD's Primer Potion (just over the lid, not above the contour) I apply MAC Pro Basic Red Pigment into the inner corner using the 213 brush. I used the 213 instead of the 239 because it's smaller, so more adaptable for small spaces - any small brush will do.
2. Orange
Next, I applied a slightly wider band of Barry M's 77 Orange. I feel like MAC pigment Genuine Orange would work better, but I don't have it. It's important to leave bold lines and not to try and blend them whilst applying at this point, otherwise there's a danger to overblend and make the colours muddy. Still using the 213 brush (clean it off a bit!).
3. Yellow
Next comes yellow! This band is MAC pigment Primary Yellow and takes me over the middle of the lid. I switched to the 239 brush for this one. I don't go above the eye's contour because I find with bolder looks, carrying them too high towards the brow bone can make them too dramatic.
4. Green
Green is the outer-colour on my rainbow, because it's my favourite colour so I like the extra space to use a couple of shades and draw it out a little. If you prefer a different one, shift the colour order around accordingly. This is MAC Pro pigment in True Chartreuse, a gorgeous yellow-green colour. Also, I noticed at this point my other eye looked better, so started photographing that. 239 brush again, being careful to keep the lines quite bold and NOT go right to the outer-V.
5. Green - Continued
This is why I didn't fill out right to the outer-V. Now I layer MAC LE Eyeshadow Wondergrass over the top of the original True Chartreuse and right into the outer-V corner, using the 239 brush. I went over it a few times to darken it at the edge.
6. Blend!
All right, it should look something like this. Now blend just the harsh lines very carefully. Do not overblend here, less is definitely more. I used the MAC 217 brush.
7. Blended!
This is how it should look. No really harsh lines but still very definite, bold lines of colour. So don't overblend, shoot for something like this. I also had to re-apply a few of the colours again a bit, so touch up a little here.
8. Blue & Purple
The rest of the rainbow comes under the eye. I used Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide on Eye Pencil in Electric to line my waterline and half of my lower lashline. Then line the other side with UD's eye pencil in Lust (not pictured).
9. Finishing Touches
Voila! I lined the top with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, and the lower waterline with UD's eye pencil in Zero. Then I brushed a little of Beauty From The Earth's multipurpose minerals in Grape and Blueberry under the lashline just to dramatise the UD blue and purple eyeliner there and extend it down a little - I used the very small brush that comes inside the Urban Decay Box Of Shadows palette, but any thin brush or MAC 209 would do nicely.
I used No 7 360 degree Lash mascara, which I like because it really separates the lashes, even if it doesn't give great length or curl. It also lasts forever.
For the highlight, I applied the highlight colour (Malt) from my MAC brow shade in Malt/Auburn all over the browbone and around/above the eyelid using the MAC 275 brush. Any light coloured eyeshadow will do fine. I blended this a little with the top of the eyelid colour to make it softer. Later, I added a light dusting of Beauty From The Earth multipurpose mineral in Silver using the same brush, all over the eyelid/browbone for a little subtle sparkle (see below).

All done! I hope that made sense to everyone.

16 November 2008 08:45wonderful tutorial! this is actually a wearable rainbow!
16 November 2008 18:18You did a great job. Actually, I like the photo tutorial. You get to see up close and step by step a little better than when they are filmed. Probably, because of the filming time constraints can't be too detailed.
16 November 2008 20:26Welcome to the wonderful world of tutorials. Fabulous!!!!!
Haha, oh I'm glad! Like I said the most important thing when doing this is NOT to overblend. When using a lot of bright colours and trying to squish them in, I think the instinct is to blend too much, but that ruins it. Rainbows are bold!
16 November 2008 20:30It looks totally lame until the end XD This is one of those looks that you can't skip the black eyeliner on. I'm really bad at lining my eyes so I hardly ever use eyeliner if I can avoid it.
Thanks for the great tutorial! This look is gorgeous! I love rainbows looks and bright colors and I'm definitely going to try this when my eye gets better. I woke up this morning and it was so swollen! Thankfully, it's getting back to normal now.
