The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Day Cream
vs
Holland & Barrett Earthly Elements Aloe Moisturising Creme with vitamins A &E
I have combination skin, with dry patches around my cheeks and the edges of my nose, but oily skin over the bridge of the nose and my chin. I used to try and exfoliate away viciously all the dry skin in the hopes of making it smooth, and smother myself in ineffective N0. 7 moisturiser, but my powder foundation still looked caked and clung to dry skin.
And lo' and behold, I discovered the wonders of aloe vera. Aloe vera gel contains a unique mixture of vitamins and minerals - in fact, it's said that if you eat eggs and drink aloe vera juice, you get every main vitamin and mineral.
If your skin is like mine, ditch the exfoliator - you're stripping your skin of its natural oils, drying it out and making patches over-produce oil. Swap to aloe products for sensitive, combination skin.
I first tried The Body Shop Aloe Soothing Day Cream:
Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera Gel) (Skin Soothing Agent), Isononyl Isononanoate (Emollient/Skin Conditioner), Glycerin (Humectant), Aqua (Water) (Solvent/Diluent), Cyclomethicone (Emollient), Pentylene Glycol (Solvent), Butylene Glycol (Humectant), Cetearyl Glucoside (Surfactant), Myristyl Myristate (Emollient), Sesamum indicum (Sesame Oil) (Emollient), Cetyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Myristyl Alcohol (Emulsifier/Emollient), Palmitic Acid (Surfactant), Stearic Acid (Emulsifier), Cetearyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Myristyl Glucoside (Surfactant/Cleansing Agent), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer (Stabiliser/Viscosity Modifier), Bisabolol (Skin Soothing Agent), Xanthan Gum (Viscosity Modifier), Avena sativa (Absorbent).
Price: £9 GBP
Size: 48g
Look & Feel (smell, appearance, packaging): 5 out of 5
Results: 4 out of 5
What I Loved: This is the first moisturiser I've found that actually makes all of my skin soft. My usual dry patches vanished, even after I used powder foundation without skin primer. It smells fantastic, it's a lovely mint-green colour and I like the neat packaging. It makes my skin feel refreshed and clean afterwards, not overly sticky, oily or greasy.
What I Hated: The price. For 50ml, £9 for moisturiser is just too much compared to the other moisturiser I tried.
Next up, Holland & Barrett Earthly Elements Aloe Moisturising Creme with Vitamins A & E:
Ingredients: Aloe Vera Gel (80%), Glyceryl Stearate, Safflower Oil, Glycerine, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Avocado Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Triethanolamine, Sesame Oil, Fragrance, Methyparaben, Quatemium-15, Propyl[araben, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Panthenol, Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A).
Price: £3.99
Size: 113g
Look & Feel: 3 out of 5
Results: 5 out of 5
What I Loved: This moisturiser actually makes my skin feel slightly softer and more hydrated than the Body Shop version. I also love that this one has vitamins A & E in, especially good for young, soft, healthy looking skin. And the price! £3.99 for over twice the amount compared to the Body Shop version.
What I Hated: The packaging! It looks so ugly, but it works so well. The creme itself is a boring white and doesn't look as nice as the Body Shop's, and although I like the smell, that isn't quite as nice either.
The Winner: Overall, I prefer the Holland & Barrett version - the company is used to dealing with natural products and high quality vitamins and aloe, and it made my skin softer (I tested one on one side of my face, and the other product on the other!) and left it feeling more hydrated. It's a better product, and has a fantastic price, a real must-have for anyone with dry or combination skin.
